Whilst insufficient macronutrient consumption typically results in weight loss, micronutrient deficiencies may not be immediately apparent.3 Micronutrients however form a crucial element of the malnutrition definition, with NICE describing malnutrition as: “a state in which a deficiency of nutrients such as energy, protein, vitamins and minerals causes measurable adverse effects on body composition, function or clinical outcome.”4
